How to Care for Dry Baby Skin: A Simple Daily Routine

Baby skin is thinner than adult skin and loses moisture faster, so dry, rough patches are very common, especially in winter. This guide covers simple daily care for dry baby skin and when to call your pediatrician.

Why baby skin gets dry

  • Cold, dry air outside and heating indoors.
  • Long or hot baths, which wash away the skin's own oils.
  • Friction from clothes, bibs and wipes.

When to see your pediatrician

Red, itchy, cracked or weeping patches can be eczema or another skin condition. Please ask your pediatrician before treating them at home. A moisturizer is for everyday dryness. It is not a treatment for a skin condition.

A simple routine for dry baby skin

  1. Short, lukewarm baths of 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Pat dry with a soft towel. Don't rub.
  3. Moisturize within a few minutes, while the skin is still slightly damp. A lotion for all-over moisture, and a balm for the driest spots such as cheeks, elbows and knees.
  4. Reapply to dry areas during the day, especially before going out in the cold.
  5. Dress your baby in soft cotton and use a humidifier in a dry room.

Always try a new product on a small patch of skin first.

Lotion or balm?

A lotion is light and spreads easily over the whole body. A balm has no water, so it is thicker and stays on the skin longer. Many parents use both: lotion after the bath, balm on dry patches.
